Beach and Underwater Cleanups

The Marine Park hosts beach and underwater cleanups within the Reserve as often as possible, involving communities based in West End, West Bay and Sandy Bay. With volunteers from the diving community and local schools, the RMP runs approximately five cleanups each year coinciding with internationally recognized events or during times of the year when the island is inundated with visitors and the reefs and shore are in dire need of cleaning.

A current project run by the Barefoot Cay and the RMPSSC has involved employing two people to clean the beaches around Barefoot Cay and Brick Bay of trash. All the trash that floats out of coastal communities becomes stuck in the mangroves or washes up on the beaches and causes an impenetrable barrier of bottles, bags and other refuse.
